2 more cases filed in Gopalganj attack, clash, 1,442 accused

Two more cases have been filed in connection with the attack and clash surrounding the July march of the National Citizens Party (NCP) in Gopalganj. On Tuesday night, the police filed one case with Tungipara Police Station and another case with Sadar Police Station as the plaintiff. 242 people have been named and 1,200 unidentified people have been named as accused in the two cases. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Police Station Mir Mohammad Shahedur Rahman and Tungipara Police Station OC Khorshed Alam confirmed the case to Prothom Alo. Tungipara Police Station Sub-Inspector Md. Monir Hossain filed a case under Section 15(3) of the Special Powers Act against 200 unidentified people, including Ward 5 Jubo League President Nurul Islam Sheikh and General Secretary Ifti Zaman, on charges of creating panic by blocking roads in Tungipara. On the other hand, the district’s Tania Zaman filed another case with Sadar Police Station, naming 160 people including the banned Chhatra League district president Newton Mollah, general secretary Ataur Rahman and 1,000 unidentified people as accused in the attack on the Gopalganj district jail and alleging obstruction of government work.

According to the Tungipara Police Station case report, on July 16, the accused blocked the Patgati Chowrangi intersection and surrounding areas of Tungipara upazila, the roads and the Pirojpur-Dhaka highway in Tungipara upazila, burning tires and disrupting traffic by creating fear and panic in the minds of the people. The accused blocked the Pirojpur-Dhaka highway with malicious intent and with the aim of foiling the NCP road meeting, creating panic in the minds of the people, and obstructing the normal activities of the public with the aim of damaging government property and the highway.

In this regard, a total of 10 cases have been filed in Gopalganj for attacks on police, vandalism and arson of vehicles, and involvement in anti-state activities and murder. The cases were filed in Sadar, Kashiani, Tungipara and Kotalipara police stations. In the 10 cases, 600 people from Awami League and its affiliates have been named and 9,250 unknown people have been named as accused.

In these cases, law enforcement agencies have arrested 334 people in various places in the district from July 16 to Wednesday afternoon and sent them to jail through the courts. Of these, 11 people were arrested in the last 24 hours. According to police sources from 5 police stations in the district, 112 people, including 11 new people, have been arrested in Sadar police station, 77 in Kashiani, 88 in Muksudpur, 29 in Tungipara and 28 in Kotalipara.

Last Wednesday, leaders, activists and supporters of the Awami League and its allied organizations attacked the NCP program. Later, five people were killed and more than fifty were injured in clashes with law enforcement agencies. To control the situation, Deputy Commissioner and Magistrate Muhammad Kamruzzaman first imposed Section 144 on that day. Curfew was imposed at night. Although the curfew was later extended several times, the curfew and Section 144 were withdrawn last Sunday.
